IWCF launched the Level 1 well control awareness course following recommendations in IOGP’s Report 476 after the Macondo tragedy. Level 1 supports our drive to increase the understanding of how well control incidents can occur, their consequences and prevention methods.

Level 1 is the industry’s first free, online course which is a useful tool for anyone new or experienced in the industry, especially students and graduates, personnel involved in well control and those who are simply interested in well control.

The Level 1 course has 7 modules which cover the following topics:

  • Overview of Oil and Gas
  • Life Cycle of a Well
  • Drilling Rigs
  • Well Control During Drilling Operations
  • Well Intervention and Workover
  • Pressure Control During Well Intervention
  • Conclusion.

At the end of each module there is a knowledge check which candidate must successfully complete before moving on to the final exam. If a pass mark of 70% or more is achieved in the final exam candidates will be able to access their online certificate.
